For a regular Genshin Impact player, paying for extra currency is most reasonable when it closes a known wish gap rather than funding open-ended pulls. One Intertwined Fate costs 160 Primogems, so 10 wishes require 1,600 and the 90-wish character-banner ceiling represents 14,400 Primogems. The published base 5-star rate is 0.6%, while the consolidated rate including guarantees is 1.6%. A $4.99 Blessing of the Welkin Moon can provide 300 Genesis Crystals plus 90 Primogems per day for 30 days, or 3,000 Primogem-equivalent currency with every daily claim. Regular players generally get more currency per dollar by planning ahead than by repeatedly buying instant Crystal packs.
Genshin Impact has been free-to-play since its 2020 release, and paying does not unlock a separate progression route. Genesis Crystals mainly shorten the time required to accumulate premium currency. They convert to Primogems at a 1:1 rate, while 160 Primogems buy one Intertwined Fate used on limited banners. A player buying enough currency for 20 wishes is therefore paying to cover 3,200 Primogems, not buying a guaranteed character.
That distinction matters because the character event banner starts with a published 0.6% base rate for a 5-star. The rate structure guarantees a 5-star by wish 90, while community modeling places the large rise in probability after roughly wish 73. The official consolidated rate, after the guarantee system is included, is listed at 1.6%. A regular player sitting at 10 pity and one sitting at 75 pity should therefore not evaluate another 10 paid wishes in the same way.
A purchase buys attempts first. Whether those attempts finish a banner goal depends on pity, guarantee status, saved Fates, remaining Primogems, and how many free rewards can still be collected before the banner closes.
Consider a player at 70 pity with 800 Primogems and five Intertwined Fates. That account already holds the equivalent of 10 wishes: five Fates plus five wishes from the 800 Primogems. Buying 20 more wishes without checking the account first would overstate the immediate shortage by 50%. Starting with the remaining gap gives a more useful spending number.
The same calculation becomes less favorable near zero pity. From zero, reaching the 90-wish ceiling requires 14,400 Primogems. Reaching two complete 90-wish cycles would require 28,800 Primogems, although many players receive a 5-star before either ceiling. A top-up therefore has more practical use when it covers the last 10 or 20 pulls than when it attempts to replace months of saved currency.
USD pricing shows why that difference becomes expensive. Current direct PC pack listings show 60 Genesis Crystals for $0.99, 300 plus 30 for $4.99, 980 plus 110 for $14.99, 1,980 plus 260 for $29.99, 3,280 plus 600 for $49.99, and 6,480 plus 1,600 for $99.99 outside the initial double bonus. The $99.99 pack therefore provides 8,080 Crystals under the listed regular bonus structure, equal to about 50 wishes after conversion.
| Regular USD pack | Listed total crystals | Approx. wishes |
|---|---|---|
| $4.99 | 330 | 2.1 |
| $14.99 | 1,090 | 6.8 |
| $29.99 | 2,240 | 14 |
| $49.99 | 3,880 | 24.3 |
| $99.99 | 8,080 | 50.5 |
The table also shows why buying a large pack does not automatically make the banner inexpensive. Even 8,080 Crystals cover only about 56% of the 14,400 Primogems associated with a full 90-wish ceiling. A player starting at zero pity could spend $99.99 and still remain roughly 40 wishes short of that ceiling under regular listed pack bonuses.
First-purchase bonuses change the comparison substantially. The listed first purchase of each standard denomination doubles its base Crystal quantity; for example, the 6,480 tier can provide 12,960 Crystals during an eligible double-bonus period. Genshin has also refreshed initial top-up bonuses around anniversary periods in multiple years, including 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. Eligibility should always be checked on the account before using a doubled figure in a budget.
A player considering a genshin top up should therefore calculate in wishes rather than Crystal-package labels. At 160 Primogems per wish, a shortage of 8 wishes equals 1,280 Primogems; 15 wishes equal 2,400; 25 equal 4,000. Looking at the shortage first reduces the chance of buying a larger package simply because the store presents it as a better quantity.
For regular daily players, Welkin produces a very different cost structure. The Blessing costs $4.99 in the U.S., grants 300 Genesis Crystals immediately, and pays 90 Primogems for each claimed day across 30 days. Perfect attendance produces 2,700 daily Primogems plus 300 Crystals, or 3,000 Primogem-equivalent currency. Dividing 3,000 by 160 gives 18.75 wishes.
Compare that with the standard $4.99 Crystal tier, listed at 330 total Crystals outside its first-purchase double bonus. Welkin can therefore provide roughly nine times as much Primogem-equivalent currency for the same $4.99, provided all 30 daily rewards are claimed. The tradeoff is time: most of the currency arrives gradually instead of immediately.
Missing days reduces that advantage. HoYoverse states that an unclaimed daily 90 Primogems are forfeited and the 30-day period is not extended. Missing three days removes 270 Primogems, or about 1.7 wishes; missing 10 days removes 900, or 5.6 wishes. Someone who logs in only 60% of the month should not calculate Welkin using the full 3,000 figure.
Time changes the purchase choice. A player saving six weeks ahead can use daily currency efficiently. A player whose desired banner ends tonight cannot turn the remaining 29 Welkin days into immediate wishes.
Character copies raise spending faster. C0 requires one copy, C1 requires a second, and C6 requires seven copies in total. Even before estimating luck, seven limited copies expose the player to far more 5-star cycles than obtaining one C0 character. For ordinary exploration, quests, events, and routine combat, adding a different C0 character can also provide another element, team role, traversal option, or play style instead of improving one existing unit.
Weapons add another budget category. The current Epitome Invocation structure has a 5-star weapon guarantee within 80 wishes, and the Epitomized Path can require up to two 5-star weapon results to secure the selected weapon under the current one-Fate-Point structure. That produces an upper bound of 160 wishes, equal to 25,600 Primogems, for the chosen 5-star weapon.
For someone who spends $5–$30 occasionally, that 25,600 figure matters more than a weapon ranking showing a 10% or 15% damage improvement. A signature weapon may improve an established team, but the same Primogems could contribute toward one or more future characters. Players with several usable 4-star or standard 5-star weapons often have more alternatives than the banner artwork suggests.
A practical purchase check can stay short:
-
Count current pity and available Fates.
-
Convert Primogems into wishes at 160:1.
-
Estimate only rewards obtainable before the banner ends.
-
Record whether the next relevant 5-star has a featured guarantee.
-
Set a dollar ceiling before purchasing.
-
Stop when that ceiling is reached, even after an unfavorable result.
Suppose a player wants 30 more wishes. The full requirement is 4,800 Primogems. If the account already has 1,600 Primogems and expects another 1,600 from available activities before the banner ends, the paid shortage falls to 1,600 Primogems, a 66.7% reduction from the original 4,800 estimate. Paying before counting existing resources would turn a 10-wish shortage into a 30-wish purchase.
The spending case becomes stronger when a small, fixed payment finishes a long-planned target and weaker as the purchase replaces normal saving. Someone who plays 60 hours in a month and spends $10 has paid about $0.17 per play hour; someone who spends $100 during the same 60 hours reaches about $1.67 per hour. Neither figure says whether the purchase is personally worthwhile, but both make the entertainment cost easier to compare with other games, streaming subscriptions, movies, or hobbies.
Regular players also benefit from separating “I want the character” from “I have already spent 60 wishes.” The first statement describes preference; the second only describes past pulls. Previous wishes still contribute to pity where the banner rules allow carry-over, so stopping does not automatically erase their mechanical use. Character event wish pity and applicable guarantees carry between banners of the same type.
For a player who logs in throughout 2026, plans banners several weeks ahead, and is comfortable skipping characters, Welkin plus free Primogems generally stretches a small budget further than frequent instant Crystal purchases. Direct top-ups fit a narrower use: a banner deadline is close, the remaining wish count has been calculated, and the amount fits money already reserved for entertainment.
The useful question is not whether paying makes Genshin better; it is how many extra wishes a fixed amount of money buys at the exact point your account is at. At 0.6% base 5-star probability, 160 Primogems per wish, 14,400 per 90-wish ceiling, and 3,000 Primogem-equivalent currency from a fully claimed $4.99 Welkin, the numbers favor patience for regular players and selective top-ups for small, defined shortages.
